Spring Garden Prep Checklist
Spring is the busiest season in the garden. A little preparation in early spring pays off all summer long โ healthier plants, fewer weeds, and less scrambling when the growing season hits full stride. This checklist covers everything you need to do before planting season starts.
1. Assess Your Garden Space
Before you touch a single tool, walk your garden and take stock:
- Check for winter damage: Look for broken branches, heaved plants, erosion, and damaged beds.
- Note drainage issues: Where does water pool after rain? These spots may need raised beds or amended soil.
- Map sun patterns: Observe where sunlight hits at morning, noon, and afternoon. New structures or tree growth may have changed things.
- Review last year's notes: What grew well? What struggled? Crop rotation matters even in small gardens.
2. Test and Amend Your Soil
Healthy soil is the foundation of a productive garden. Most county extension offices offer soil testing for affordable.
A soil test tells you:
- pH level (most vegetables prefer 6.0-7.0)
- Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium levels
- Organic matter percentage
- Any deficiencies to address
Based on results, amend with compost, lime (to raise pH), or sulfur (to lower pH). Work amendments into the top 6-8 inches of soil.
Tool Needed: Chapin 1-Gallon Pump Sprayer
Perfect for applying liquid fertilizers and soil amendments evenly. Adjustable nozzle for targeted or broad application.

Remove debris, dead annuals, and fallen branches. Leave any perennial foliage that's still green โ it may be alive.
- Rake out leaves and debris
- Remove dead annual stems
- Cut back ornamental grasses to 4-6 inches
- Divide overcrowded perennials
- Add 2-3 inches of fresh mulch
4. Maintain Your Tools
Clean, sharp tools work better and last longer. Spend an afternoon on tool maintenance before the busy season.
- Clean rust with steel wool or a wire brush
- Sharpen pruners, loppers, and shovels
- Oil pivot points and moving parts
- Replace cracked handles
- Check hoses for leaks and replace washers
Tool Needed: Fiskars Bypass Pruning Shears
The go-to pruner for spring cleanup. Self-sharpening blade, ergonomic handles, and a 5/8-inch cut capacity for most pruning tasks.

Know your last frost date and work backward:
- 6-8 weeks before last frost: Start seeds indoors (tomatoes, peppers, herbs)
- 4-6 weeks before: Direct sow cool-season crops (lettuce, spinach, peas)
- After last frost: Transplant warm-season crops, plant beans and squash
6. Set Up Irrigation
Consistent watering is the difference between a good garden and a great one. Set up drip irrigation or soaker hoses before planting โ it's much easier when beds are empty.
Tool Needed: INNAV8 Heavy Duty Hose Nozzle
Ten spray patterns for everything from gentle seedling watering to strong jet cleaning. All-metal construction that lasts.
